48 Life Lessons at age 48

So, I have managed to complete another year! What a ride!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me! 😂

Chapter 47 was quite possibly one of the MOST challenging years of my life so far, though I think I say that every year!!! lol
But truthfully, it was the year of struggle and change, all the hospital visits, Thomas going into the RAF, the business challenges, the people who have come into my life but also the people I have removed and of course those who have voluntarily left – it has been a rollercoaster!
But thank you, as every element both positive and negative has contributed to me being where I am right now and I feel nothing but appreciation and gratitude in a world that is losing its head I think I have just about managed to keep mine!

So, I wanted to share a post I have been writing for the last month, many of points I have made before but their significance is timeless and well worthy of a reminder!

They are in no particular order but I hope you enjoy. Let me know which one resonates most –

  1. Discipline will take you places motivation never will.
Motivation comes and goes; discipline keeps you moving.
  2. You are never too old to set a new goal.
At 48, I still have big ambitions – and I intend to chase them.
  3. Black belt was never the destination.
There is always another level to reach, in martial arts and in life.
  4. Consistency beats intensity.
Small actions repeated for years create extraordinary results.
  5. Your health is an investment.
Everything has an ROI, looking after your body becomes increasingly important as the years pass.
  6. Sometimes you have to rebuild.
Injuries, setbacks and disappointments don’t have to be the end of the story.
  7. Surround yourself with good people.
The people around you influence your standards, attitude and direction.
  8. Not everyone needs to understand your vision.
If you believe in it, keep building.
  9. Success rarely happens in a straight line.
There will be detours, mistakes and difficult periods.
  10. Confidence is built through action.
You don’t wait until you’re confident—you do difficult things until confidence develops.
  11. Travel changes your perspective.
Experiencing different countries, cultures and people teaches lessons no classroom can replicate.
  12. Never stop being a student.
The moment you believe you know everything is the moment you stop improving.
  13. A great instructor creates people who eventually don’t need them.
Teaching is about developing independence, not dependence.
  14. Leadership is about responsibility, not status.
A title means very little if you’re unwilling to lead by example.
  15. Your standards become your reputation.
    Quite simply – protect them.
  16. How you behave when nobody is watching matters.
Character is built away from applause.
  17. Business will test you in completely different ways to martial arts.
But discipline, resilience and perseverance transfer remarkably well.
  18. Don’t be frightened of making mistakes.
Be frightened of repeatedly making the same ones.
  19. Learn to say no.
Every yes costs you time somewhere else.
  20. Protect your energy.
Not every argument deserves your participation and not every problem deserves your attention.
  21. You cannot please everyone.
Trying to do so usually means compromising what you believe in.
  22. Know when to walk away.
Sometimes strength isn’t holding on—it’s recognising when something no longer deserves your time.
  23. Hard conversations usually become harder when you avoid them.
Deal with problems early and professionally.
  24. Your business should serve your life – not consume it.
Growth means little if you lose everything else that matters.
  25. Money matters, but freedom matters more.
Time, choice and control over your life are incredibly valuable.
  26. Invest in people.
Helping someone else become successful is one of the most rewarding forms of success.
  27. Celebrate other people’s achievements.
Someone else’s success doesn’t diminish yours.
  28. Remember where you started.
Progress is easy to overlook when you’re constantly looking towards the next target.
  29. Don’t compare your chapter 20 with somebody else’s chapter 2.
    Everyone’s journey is different.
  30. Age changes how you train, not why you train.
Train intelligently, recover properly and keep going.
  31. There is enormous value in doing difficult things voluntarily.
    Challenge develops resilience.
  32. Comfort is enjoyable, but very little growth happens there.
Occasionally you need to make yourself uncomfortable.
  33. The basics still matter.
Whether it’s Taekwondo, business or life, people often search for complicated answers while neglecting fundamentals.
  34. Preparation creates confidence.
When you’ve done the work, pressure becomes easier to handle.
  35. The toughest opponent is usually yourself.
Your doubts, excuses and limiting beliefs can defeat you long before anybody else does.
  36. Children remember how you made them feel, lead by example in both your words and actions
Coaching young people, like parenting, carries a responsibility far greater than just kicks and punches – if you know you know 😉
  37. Martial arts, like life, is really about developing people.
Technique gets someone through the door, but being a good role model and mentor builds confidence, character and a belonging that can change lives
  38. Build something that can exist beyond you.
Real leadership creates the next generation of leaders.
  39. Be proud of your achievements without becoming satisfied.
Gratitude for the past and ambition for the future can coexist.
  40. Don’t postpone everything until “one day.”
There isn’t an unlimited supply of tomorrows or ‘I’ll start on Mondays’
  41. Spend time with the people who matter.
Business opportunities return. Some moments and people don’t.
  42. Take more photographs.
Ordinary days eventually become important memories – capture the moment
  43. Tell people you appreciate them.
    Don’t assume they already know.
  44. Your response matters more than the setback.
You can’t control everything that happens, but you can control what you do next.
  45. Success means more when you bring people with you.
Watching others grow because you helped create an opportunity is incredibly rewarding.
  46. Leave things better than you found them.
A school, business, organisation, relationship or simply someone’s day.
  47. Keep going Beyond All Boundaries.
Keep learning, challenging yourself, helping others and refusing to allow age – or anything else – to decide what you’re capable of.
  48. There is still plenty of time to achieve something extraordinary.
48 isn’t a finishing line – far from it, just watch the next 12 months

And perhaps the biggest lesson…

I haven’t got everything figured out – and that’s OK.

At 48 I’m still learning, still making mistakes, still changing, still setting goals and still discovering what I’m capable of.

And perhaps that’s exactly how life should be. 🥋❤️🖤
