48 Life Lessons at age 48

So, I have managed to complete another year! What a ride!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me! 😂

Chapter 47 was quite possibly one of the MOST challenging years of my life (so far), though I think I say that every year!!!
But truthfully, it was the year of struggle and change, all the hospital visits, Thomas going into the RAF, the business challenges, the people who have come into my life but also the people I have removed and of course those who have voluntarily left – it has been a rollercoaster!
But thank you, as every element both positive and negative has contributed to me being where I am right now and I feel nothing but appreciation and gratitude in a world that is losing its head I think I have just about managed to keep mine!

So, I wanted to share a post I have been writing for the last month, many of the  points I have made before but their significance is timeless and well worthy of a reminder!

They are in no particular order but I hope you enjoy. Let me know which one resonates most –

  1. Discipline will take you places motivation never will.
Motivation comes and goes; discipline keeps you moving forwards.
  2. You are never too old to set a new goal.
At 48, I still have big ambitions – and I intend to chase them.
  3. Black belt was never the destination.
There is always another level to reach, both in martial arts and in life.
  4. Consistency beats intensity.
Small actions repeated for years create extraordinary results.
  5. Your health is an investment.
Everything has an ROI, looking after your body and mind becomes increasingly important as the years pass.
  6. Sometimes you have to rebuild.
Injuries, setbacks and disappointments don’t have to be the end of the story.
  7. Surround yourself with good people.
The people around you influence your standards, attitude and direction.
  8. Not everyone needs to understand your vision.
If you believe in it, keep building.
  9. Success rarely happens in a straight line.
There will be detours, mistakes and difficult periods.
  10. Confidence is built through action.
You don’t wait until you’re confident – you do difficult things until confidence develops.
  11. Travel changes your perspective.
Experiencing different countries, cultures and people teaches lessons no classroom can replicate.
  12. Never stop being a student.
The moment you believe you know everything is the moment you stop improving.
  13. A great instructor creates people who eventually don’t need them.
Teaching is about developing independence, not dependence.
  14. Leadership is about responsibility, not status.
A title means very little if you’re unwilling to lead by example.
  15. Your standards become your reputation.
    Quite simply – protect them.
  16. How you behave when nobody is watching matters.
Character is built away from applause.
  17. Business will test you in completely different ways to martial arts.
But discipline, resilience and perseverance transfer remarkably well.
  18. Don’t be frightened of making mistakes.
Be frightened of repeatedly making the same ones.
  19. Learn to say no.
Every yes costs you time somewhere else.
  20. Protect your energy.
Not every argument deserves your participation and not every problem deserves your attention.
  21. You cannot please everyone.
Trying to do so usually means compromising what you believe in.
  22. Know when to walk away.
Sometimes strength isn’t holding on – it’s recognising when something no longer deserves your time.
  23. Hard conversations usually become harder when you avoid them.
Deal with problems early and professionally.
  24. Your business should serve your life – not consume it.
Growth means little if you lose everything else that matters.
  25. Money matters, but freedom matters more.
Time, choice and control over your life are incredibly valuable.
  26. Invest in people.
Helping someone else become successful is one of the most rewarding forms of success.
  27. Celebrate other people’s achievements.
Someone else’s success doesn’t diminish yours.
  28. Remember where you started.
Progress is easy to overlook when you’re constantly looking towards the next target.
  29. Don’t compare your chapter 20 with somebody else’s chapter 2.
    Everyone’s journey is different.
  30. Age changes how you train, not why you train.
Train intelligently, recover properly and keep going.
  31. There is enormous value in doing difficult things voluntarily.
    Challenge develops resilience.
  32. Comfort is enjoyable, but very little growth happens there.
Occasionally you need to make yourself uncomfortable.
  33. The basics still matter.
Whether it’s Taekwondo, business or life, people often search for complicated answers while neglecting fundamentals.
  34. Preparation creates confidence.
When you’ve done the work, pressure becomes easier to handle.
  35. The toughest opponent is usually yourself.
Your doubts, excuses and limiting beliefs can defeat you long before anybody else does.
  36. Children remember how you made them feel, lead by example in both your words and actions
Coaching young people, like parenting, carries a responsibility far greater than just kicks and punches – if you know you know 😉
  37. Martial arts, like life, is really about developing people.
Technique gets someone through the door, but being a good role model and mentor builds confidence, character and a belonging that can change lives
  38. Build something that can exist beyond you.
Real leadership creates the next generation of leaders.
  39. Be proud of your achievements without becoming satisfied.
Gratitude for the past and ambition for the future can coexist.
  40. Don’t postpone everything until “one day.”
There isn’t an unlimited supply of tomorrows or ‘I’ll start on Mondays’
  41. Spend time with the people who matter.
Business opportunities return. Some moments and people don’t.
  42. Take more photographs.
Ordinary days eventually become important memories – capture the moment
  43. Tell people you appreciate them.
    Don’t assume they already know.
  44. Your response matters more than the setback.
You can’t control everything that happens, but you can control what you do next.
  45. Success means more when you bring people with you.
Watching others grow because you helped create an opportunity is incredibly rewarding.
  46. Leave things better than you found them.
A school, business, organisation, relationship or simply someone’s day.
  47. Keep going Beyond All Boundaries.
Keep learning, challenging yourself, helping others and refusing to allow age – or anything else – to decide what you’re capable of.
  48. There is still plenty of time to achieve something extraordinary.
48 isn’t a finishing line – far from it, just watch the next 12 months

And perhaps the biggest lesson…

I haven’t got everything figured out – and that’s OK.

At 48 I’m still learning, still making mistakes, still changing, still setting goals and still discovering what I’m capable of.

And perhaps that’s exactly how life should be. 🥋❤️🖤

Striking Fitness & Conditioning with Kidderminster Harriers Football Club

‘VERVE Martial Arts – Kidderminster Harriers collaboration’

We were asked to deliver a striking, fitness and conditioning session for the men’s first team at Kidderminster Harriers Football Club as they enter the final stages of their pre-season training preparations – from the ‘get go’ you could see their super focus and workrate!
As such we turning it up to another level … from the pad drill start, to the high volume power striking, to the team building aggression tests at the end, it really was a ‘top-draw’ session leaving them all sweating, smiling and learning!

Quality work boys!

All the very best for the season ahead – go smash it!

Check out my facebook for more photos and videos of the session!

British Taekwondo Championships 2024

Where do I start ?!?! Feet are sore, completely exhausted and lost my voice but I wouldn’t change it for the world – it was truly EPIC !!

Nearly 12 months ago we set out a vision for hosting our first international tournament since 2019 gathering support and traction as time unfolded … and after a HUGE couple of months it finally arrived and was everything we hoped for and more!
After brief introductions our International Teams opened the event with a head to head between England and USA
The team walk outs and national anthems were passionate and heart warming and it was wonderful to see all the competitors, families and friends stood so proudly supporting x
From the very first bout you could feel the atmosphere lift, the respect but also camaraderie and competitive buzz off all ages and teams, you had to be there to truly feel it!
Going into the adults it was all square with both the men and women’s going down to the very last fighter in the sparring – USA won the international trophy by a narrow 2 team victory overall !
Congratulations everyone who was selected and competed, you did us all so very proud!!
It was then the turn of our Individual Categories – students and competitors literally came from all round the UK, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and of course USA!
The standard was high and all categories keenly contested with medals being shared across all clubs and countries – I have totally lost track of everyone’s results so will need to sort out the areas sheets. So in the meantime i will continually add to this post over the next couple of days and I will share as many photos and videos as I can … but I literally can’t keep up with them at the moment there are so many and they are so amazing!

I’d like to personally thank all the referees and officials who worked exceptionally hard all day doing an amazing job for which we all are forever grateful!
Mrs Emma Swift, Davina Weston, Cath Gannon and front door staff doing an exceptional job as always managing entry, merchandise and enquiries.
A special mention to Mr Tom Gilbert who took on the job of floor manager to alleviate pressure and problem solve where required, amazing job sir!

What a team!

Thank you also to those who came in at 7.30am for the crazy set up but also those who stayed to knock down and tidy up afterwards, there are soooo many moving parts with an event of this magnitude and it simply could not happen without you!
I truly value everyone’s hard work, trust, loyalty and support in helping create a safe platform for our people to perform, challenge themselves but also create memories and friendships that will last a lifetime x

Respect as always

strong than yesterday

‘stronger than yesterday’

Quality workout today with Thomas aka camera man and son 😂
We got chatting on the value of exercise, healthy habits and the impact of good people in our lives, and bad ones too!
The inquisitive nature of the convo gave me goose bumps #prouddad and it got me thinking.

It has been a tough year so far in so many ways, battling personal injuries, house move don’t mention it😏, business challenges, self doubt (yes me self doubt 😂) and more!!

zero excuses given, zero sympathy required and zero apologies made

We have persevered and are smashing this year so far! 💪🏻
Be confident enough to make decisions and necessary changes quickly but thoughtfully, believe in yourself and those around you as it is a lonely journey by yourself, be consistent not forgetting the struggles are where the successes are truly earned 😉

Much love & respect as always x

PS – I am not posting for this for the likes, I am posting in hope that maybe just one person will take the time to read it, get fired up and pass the positivity forwards – together we all grow

life gets better by change

‘your life doesn’t get better by chance – it gets better by change’

I have had numerous conversations over the last couple of days highlighting a point I have written about before but it is most definitely worth revisiting 🤔
Whether you know it or not, everything has a potential ROI (return on investment) and I am not talking about the monetary aspect.
Ever felt empowered after spending time with certain people, ready to take action and level up whereas others seem to steal your time, energy and generally just made you feel crap 😏
Chose who you give your time and energy to, don’t be an arse about it, just understand everyone has a role to play and value to bring so position people accordingly.
Remember the ability to make change is in your hands, you are just one small step and decision away from something completely different, very often even subtle amendments can have an impact beyond comprehension.
So be bold, be brave, don’t be afraid to make decisions, make changes but above all be true to yourself …
I believe in you, you got this!
Much love & respect as always x

On a side note and because it was discussed this week, have you ever heard of the butterfly effect?
Or perhaps you are more familiar with the power of the compounding – if not it is definitely worth taking a look with a number of good books I could recommend by a similar title.

Thank me later 😉
